Overview

The Irish Famine in Montreal Walking Tour revisits one of the darkest chapters in the city’s history, also known as Black ’47. Starting in June, 1847, Montreal was overwhelmed by wave after wave of Irish refugees fleeing brutal oppression at home, including a massive famine triggered by a potato blight and colonial British landowners, many of whom forced tenants off their lands.

The walking tour provides in-depth history about the Irish Famine's impact on Montreal in 1847. Guests will visit key sites associated with this tragedy, including the Old Port and Lachine Canal, the Grey Nuns Motherhouse, the two locations of Montreal’s fever sheds and mass burial grounds, and the infamous Black Rock monument.

The Irish Famine in Montreal Walking Tour is sure to please those researching family roots, history buffs, and tourists and locals interested in this dark episode in the city’s history.

Interesting tour about Montreal's Irish history

Very interesting and informative tour with Donovan King about the history of the Irish famine victims who came to Montreal . This tour can be a challenge because it is about a history that has left few visible traces. But Mr. King is knowledgeable and passionate and therefore makes this experience memorable.
Thought I knew something about the Irish in Montreal… Turns out I didn’t.

I thought I knew something about the history of the Irish in Montreal… turns out I didn’t.
Donovan King's historical Irish Famine walking tour was both educational and entertaining even though the events are extremely sad. Donovan is knowledgeable, passionate and a wonderful storyteller. I plan to take his other walking tours.

I really enjoyed this tour. It was a nice walk downtown Montreal where I learned about the stories of the early Irish immigrants struggles and also about the city heroes like Les Soeurs Grises and John Easton Mills the Montreal mayor who gave their lives while helping the typhus victims. Unfortunately a lot of this history is largely ignored. I will definitely see the city with new eyes from now on.
